Is coffee/caffeine bad for you?
Over at my primary blog, Supplement Updates, I try to answer common health quesitons in addition to providing updates about dietary supplement and nutrition research.
One common question that many people may be asking themselves is whether or not coffee is bad for you... To answer this question, I have written two articles in this three-part series.
First, I've cited research about the effects of caffeine consumption on cholesterol levels, diabetes risk, and markers of oxidative stress: Is coffee bad for you (part i)? To summarize, the latest research suggests that coffee consumption does not adverseley affect cholesterol levels, diabetes risk, and markers of oxidative stress.
For the second part of this series, I've covered the recent data on the risks coffee consumption with certain types of cancer: Is coffee bad for you, part ii? In short, the data on this is far from definitive. However, there is an association between coffee consumption and breast/lung cancer risk. Certain cofounders, smoking n particular, are difficult to separate to determine the true risk associated with drinking coffee.
Part iii of this article series will include some general effects of coffee consumption on concentration, athletic performance, and other psychological effects.
